Hiking is a great way to promote wellness and mental health and it is something I encourage everyone of my clients to start doing!

The physical benefits of hiking include increased strength, endurance, and flexibility.
Additionally, hiking can be a great way to spend quality time with friends and family, as well as to connect with nature.
Going outside in the sun everyday is important for our physical and mental health.
Sunlight helps to boost vitamin D levels, which can help regulate mood and energy levels, as well as strengthening your bones.
Spending time outdoors can also help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
Additionally, light exercise such as walking or hiking can help to improve sleep quality, reduce stress, and increase overall wellbeing.
And there are sooooo hiking trails in many parts of the US and around the world!
One of my favorite spots to hike around Las Vegas is of course, Red Rock Canyon.
There are over 20 hikes of varying levels.
Some are super short and easy and some are pretty long. I think the longest one is about 11 miles long.
I prefer to hike in the desert, but I also love hiking in more tropical or forest areas as well.
We hiked on the big island of Hawaii in 2018 and it was gorgeous! The only bad part is the greener it is, usually the more mosquitos and bugs there will be ?

Top 20 tips for a beginner hiker
- Make sure to wear comfortable and appropriate clothing for the conditions you will be hiking in. And wear layers! You can also strip a layer off and put it in your backpack
- Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you hydrated and energized. The usual guidance is 1 liter per person, but it will vary depending on the weather and the hike
- Bring a map and compass, or use a GPS device, to help you navigate the terrain. I love to use the AllTrails app.
- Know your limits and don’t overexert yourself. Slow and steady wins the race!
- Let others know where you are going and when you plan to return.
- Wear proper footwear and make sure they are broken in, to avoid blisters.
- Pack a first-aid kit with essentials such as band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers, especially if going on a longer hike or if hiking alone
- Bring a flashlight and an emergency whistle, in case you get lost or need help.
- Do some research before you leave, so you know what to expect and can plan accordingly.
- Bring a multi-tool or pocketknife, to help you with any unexpected tasks.
- Pack light, as carrying too much weight can be tiring and uncomfortable.
- Stay on designated trails to avoid getting lost and to protect the environment.
- Watch for wildlife and be aware of your surroundings.
- Stay on the lookout for any dangerous conditions, such as slippery rocks or unstable terrain.
- Make sure to stay hydrated and take breaks when needed.
- Know the weather forecast and check for updates during your hike.
- Make sure to always stay together with your hiking partners.
- Pack a trash bag and take out what you bring in, to keep the trails clean.
- Don’t forget to bring a camera (or your phone) to capture the memories. A hiking selfie is a necessity ?
