From Medications to Wellness: How a Pharmacist’s Expertise Makes Them an Ideal Wellness Coach

A lot of people I meet are shocked when I tell them that I am a pharmacist as well as a wellness coach!

They think that because I studied medications and medicine that I am ONLY pro Big Pharma, and that is definitely not the case.

I have much more of a holistic outlook on health and wellness. I think that you should try the natural things first (within reason obviously, I’m not talking about emergencies and accidents and the like), and only go to medications when other things have failed.

I think that being a pharmacist actually gives me an advantage, because I see and understand both sides of the equation.

I spent years going through a doctoral program and then spent years working as a clinical pharmacist.

I see where medicine has its place, and I also know how important nutrition, exercise, and even the little things like how important it is to get sunlight everyday.

A pharmacist can make an excellent wellness coach for a few reasons:

1). In-depth knowledge of medications: As a pharmacist, I have extensive knowledge of medications and their potential side effects. This expertise can be invaluable when working with clients who are taking medications and may need guidance on how to manage their health condition(s) while also focusing on their wellness goals. I can even assist with supplement interactions and selecting the right one, as well as how to speak with your physician about your medication routine.

2). Understanding of the human body: Pharmacists are highly trained in the anatomy and physiology of the human body, including how medications interact with different bodily systems. This knowledge can be applied to helping clients understand how lifestyle factors, such as nutrition and exercise, impact their overall health and wellbeing.

3). Focus on evidence-based practices: Pharmacists are trained to use evidence-based practices to help patients manage their health conditions. This approach can also be applied to wellness coaching, where I use the latest research and clinical guidelines to develop personalized wellness plans for my clients. I love doing research, and I am constantly updating my programs when evidence changes.

4). Communication skills: As a pharmacist, I have experienced communicating complex medical information in a clear and concise way to hundreds, if not thousands, of patients over the years. This skill can be essential in wellness coaching, where I need to effectively communicate with my clients about their health, wellness goals, and progress.

Overall, a pharmacist’s knowledge and expertise in medications, human biology, evidence-based practices, and communication can make them an excellent wellness coach who can help clients achieve their health and wellness goals in a safe and effective way.

5). Attention to detail: Pharmacists are trained to pay close attention to details, including medication doses, interactions, and side effects. This skill translates well to wellness coaching, where a coach needs to pay close attention to their clients’ progress, adjustments, and any potential issues that arise.

6). Holistic approach: As a healthcare professional, I understand the importance of taking a holistic approach to health and wellness. I can help clients address all aspects of their lives, including diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep, to achieve optimal health.

7). Experience with diverse populations: Pharmacists work with people of all ages and backgrounds, from children to the elderly, and from various cultures and socioeconomic statuses. This experience helps me relate to and understand my clients’ unique needs and perspectives, allowing me to provide personalized coaching.

8). Adaptable to change: Pharmacists are trained to stay up-to-date with the latest research, technologies, and trends in healthcare. This adaptability can be valuable in wellness coaching, where I need to be flexible and responsive to my clients’ evolving needs and goals.
