The Burnout Epidemic And How To Deal With It

Burnout is a HUGE problem in our society, especially among women, and this epidemic is likely only going to get worse.

The majority of us are stressed out constantly, are over worked, overwhelmed, and frankly, burnt out.

Most peoples cortisol levels are insane, insomnia is rising, obesity is skyrocketing, and chronic health conditions increase every year.

What is burnout anyway?

According to Psychology today, “Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and often physical exhaustion brought on by prolonged or repeated stress. Though it’s most often caused by problems at work, it can also appear in other areas of life.”

According to a recent survey, 42% of women working in corporate America report feeling burnout or reported symptoms of burnout. That is a crazy high number!

The majority of people do not die of old age anymore, they die of cancer and other health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, and stress can exacerbate a lot of medical conditions.

There has got to be a better way right?!

Humans are not designed to work 40+ hours per week inside under florescent lighting. And most individuals working conditions definitely contribute to all of the issues we are seeing in our society, but you can help change that.

By slowly incorporating self care, exercise, and holistic lifestyle routines into your daily life, you can help reduce your risk for burnout and other chronic medical conditions that will rob you of your health and happiness.

I will never stop saying it….Health is Wealth!

Last year I was working as a clinical pharmacist 50+ hours per week. My shift was from 9am-9pm and I had to arrive to the pharmacy about 30 minutes early with a ~30-40 minute commute on top of that. This amounted to about a 14 hour workday everyday, and I was also on call every night for the last 6 months I worked there.

Being on call meant that if my phone rang, I would have to immediately get out of bed and drive to the pharmacy to fill whatever medication the nurses needed that night. This meant that there were many, many, many nights where I did not sleep at all, and then still had to work the entire day the next day.

It was AWFUL, to say the least.

And do you know how dangerous this is?!

Sleep is essential! Especially if you work a dangerous job like a pharmacist where a small mistake can easily kill or harm a patient, but the healthcare world doesn’t care much about safety for their employees, or even their patients, for that matter.

I constantly voiced my concerns, but they were never answered. Profits above people is the motto I learned during my career, which was very depressing and not why I got into the healthcare field.

It is terrifying what happens behind closed doors in these professions, and I was ridiculously burned out from it all.

That is when I made a DRASTIC change in my life and abruptly quit my job and changed career paths.

I dove head first into learning all I could about burn out and how to solve it, insomnia remedies, holistic health and wellness tips and tricks, yoga and meditations, hormone health, gut health, and even cycle syncing.

I love combining my medical knowledge and doctorate clinical experience with holistic alternatives! I think you should definitely try the natural stuff before you start on medications, for the most part.

During this time is also when I developed my 90 day signature program.

I also got my yoga 200YT certification last year and I am even working on my 300hr right now as well. I love to learn new things and then share that knowledge with other people!

Here are 6 simple ways to help prevent burnout

1). Exercise

You don’t need to spend hours at the gym either. Even mini 15 minute workouts can give you both a physical and mental boost. Try a mini yoga session or a small walk outside.

2). Eat a balanced diet

Eat more protein and whole foods! Beef, chicken, fish, beans, quinoa, sweet potatoes, broccoli and the like! Reduce the amount of packaged foods and switch to real food instead.

3). Get enough sleep and practice sleep hygiene

Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep per night and practice sleep hygiene! I like to dim the lights at night, turn off my phone and electronics, and reduce the temperature in the bedroom to get a good nights sleep. You could even try a white noise or sleep machine and see if that helps

4). Ask for help

Sometimes one of the best things you can do when you are stressed and overwhelmed is to ask for help! Ask a coworker, family member, or even a friend to help you with some tasks and get some things off your plate. Or try to delegate and hire someone if you can, such as a housekeeper or landscaper, if you are overwhelmed with all of the household tasks. Even just having someone come once a month or so can be beneficial.

5). Seek connections

Call or facetime a friend and vent a little! Go out to lunch with your bestie. Go on a wine and cheese date night with your husband. Find ways to relax and destress with your favorite humans! Or maybe even play with your favorite furry friend 😉

6). Meditate

You know how much I love meditating right?! Meditating in the morning when you wake up or right before you go to bed can be very beneficial to reducing your stress levels.
